June 11, 2024 – Accorded, Inc., the leading healthcare actuarial intelligence company that helps healthcare companies drive better and faster value-based care (VBC) decisions, and Health Care Originals (HCO), the first complete virtual respiratory care platform for those with Asthma or COPD, announce the launch of their partnership, which kicks off with a presentation at AHIP 2024, the national association whose members provide health care coverage, services, and solutions to hundreds of millions of Americans every day.
Accorded’s actuarial analysis revealed the significant cost burden associated with chronic respiratory diseases, particularly asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Costly comorbidities often accompany these illnesses. For instance, the prevalence of obesity is 92% higher among asthma patients compared to the general commercial population. Diabetes and hypertension are also more prevalent among asthma sufferers by 41% and 45%, respectively. The presence of anxiety is 67% higher in individuals with asthma and 83% higher in those with COPD compared to the general commercial population
COPD patients face even higher comorbidity rates, with diabetes being 283% more prevalent, obesity being 167% more prevalent, and hypertension being 265% more prevalent than in the general commercial population.
Financially, these comorbidities substantially increase healthcare costs. Asthma patients with comorbidities incur an additional $10,000 to $15,000 in costs per member per year (PMPY), while those with COPD and these comorbidities incur $31,000 to $40,000 PMPY of additional expenses.
The teams will present detailed cost savings data from their innovative Virtual Respiratory Care platform at AHIP 2024.
